THE GAP
Dermocosmetics exist. A post-procedure formulation framework is still missing.
Korea is home to both a globally influential beauty industry and one of the world’s most active aesthetic-treatment markets. Yet the two do not always meet at the moment immediately after a procedure.
Traditional cosmetic development is not always structured around the immediate sensory and tolerability conditions that can follow aesthetic procedures. This is not a fault but a difference in the use context each is designed for.
Testing every commercial product procedure by procedure, formula by formula and patient by patient is not realistic in practice. When suitability is uncertain, clinicians may take the more conservative route — limiting what is applied immediately after a procedure.
Consumers have even less information. Products tolerated by intact skin are not automatically suited to freshly treated skin.
What should a finished product be like if it is intended to touch skin immediately after a procedure?
THIS QUESTION IS WHERE HSEF™ BEGAN.
POST-PROCEDURE SKIN
Post-procedure skin is not ordinary skin.
Depending on procedure type, intensity and treatment depth, post-procedure skin may temporarily show increased sensitivity, altered barrier condition or reduced tolerance to external stimuli. In barrier-disruptive procedures, transepidermal water loss may rise for a period.
These changes are not uniform. Laser, RF, HIFU, needling and peeling differ in mechanism and depth of action, and the course that follows differs accordingly.
A product that is well tolerated on intact skin is not automatically optimal for freshly treated skin.
THE OVERLOOKED VARIABLE
The finished formulation is part of the skin environment.
Conventional dermacosmetics often begin with a single question: what active ingredient should we add?
HSEF™ asks a different one: what physicochemical environment does the finished product create when it meets post-procedure skin?
That environment is determined by the finished product as a whole, not by any single ingredient within it.

CONVENTIONAL QUESTION
HSEF QUESTION
“What active should we add?”
→“What environment will the finished product create on post-procedure skin?”
“Which ingredients soothe or support recovery?”
→“Which formulation variables may create unnecessary additional stress?”
“Do we have a proprietary ingredient?”
→“How are osmolality, electrolytes, pH, buffering and the complete formulation controlled?”
“Is the ingredient list gentle?”
→“Has the finished product been evaluated under its intended post-procedure use condition?”
HSEF™ FORMULATION ARCHITECTURE
Four physicochemical conditions, designed together.
HSEF™ is not an ingredient or a raw material. It integrates osmotic state, electrolyte composition, skin-adapted pH and buffering capacity into a single system, at the level of the finished product.
The design is ECF-inspired in its osmotic and electrolyte logic, adapted to the physiological environment of the skin surface with a mildly acidic pH. Replicating extracellular fluid is not the objective.
DESIGN PARAMETERS
Defined isotonic range
Controlled electrolyte profile
Skin-adapted mildly acidic pH
Defined buffering performance
FINISHED-PRODUCT ENGINEERING
Designed and measured at the level of the finished product.

FORMULATION DESIGN
Finished-product design
FINISHED-PRODUCT DESIGN
The finished product is assessed as a complete physicochemical system rather than by the presence of individual ingredients: osmotic state, electrolyte profile, skin-adapted pH and buffering capacity are defined and measured on the product as sold.

FORMULA REVIEW
Formula review
FORMULA REVIEW
Ingredients associated with irritation risk on freshly treated skin are reviewed on the basis of mechanism and evidence — fragrance and essential oils, sensory irritants, aggressive exfoliating acids, unsuitable retinoid systems, sensitising preservatives and harsh surfactant systems. The review is performed against the complete INCI of the finished product.

EVALUATION
Field evaluation
FIELD EVALUATION
Specification alone is not sufficient. Products are evaluated under their intended-use condition — stinging and discomfort, erythema, barrier indicators such as TEWL, post-application tolerability and adverse-event follow-up, with split-face comparative designs where appropriate. Claims are permitted only to the level supported by product-specific evidence.

THE UNIT OF EVALUATION
Ingredients do not determine the final environment on their own.
The same ingredient behaves differently depending on concentration, humectant load, electrolyte interaction, pH adjustment, preservation, surfactants and the vehicle system. The physicochemical environment a product creates is an outcome of all of them together.
This is why the unit of evaluation under HSEF™ is always the finished product, in the form in which it will be used.
The evaluation unit is the finished product.

HSEF™ does not replace ingredient-led formulation. It adds another layer of design — the physicochemical condition in which those ingredients are delivered.
HSEF™ is a proprietary formulation technology and technology trademark of PAGE LAB BIOMEDICS Inc.
FIELD-DRIVEN R&D
A formulation hypothesis, tested in the field.
HSEF™ provides the starting approach. We develop prototypes, evaluate them in real post-procedure use, and use what we learn to improve the formulation.
HSEF™ is not a finished theory. It keeps being refined through observation and evaluation.
OBSERVE
Recurring questions and reactions seen in real post-procedure care.
DEFINE
The observation is turned into a measurable formulation question.
FORMULATE
Prototypes are built to the HSEF™ design conditions.
EVALUATE
Prototypes are assessed under the intended-use condition.
REFINE
What we learn returns to the design conditions.
CORE FORMULATION SYSTEM
HSEF Buffer™
HSEF Buffer™ is the core formulation system that implements HSEF™ technology in an actual formulation — managing the osmotic and electrolyte environment, a mildly acidic pH suited to the skin surface, and buffering capacity against pH drift on contact.
HSEF™ is the broader technology; HSEF Buffer™ is the core formulation system used to put that technology into practice.
NUMERICAL SPECIFICATIONS AND TEST METHODS ARE PROVIDED SEPARATELY AS TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION.
FROM TECHNOLOGY TO PRODUCT
A technology matters when it works in a finished product.
HSEF™ is not an ingredient added to a formula. Its principles are applied and evaluated at the finished-product level, where osmolality, electrolyte composition, pH, buffering capacity and the complete ingredient system interact.
